About Jayme Newton
With a strong commitment to justice and a passion for defending the rights of individuals, Jayme Newton joined David Anber’s Law Office in Ottawa as an associate criminal defence lawyer in 2024. Equipped with a solid foundation in criminal law, she provides skillful legal representation across a diverse range of cases, from minor offenses to serious criminal charges.
Jayme earned her law degree from the University of Ottawa, following the completion of an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the same institution. During her time in law school, she gained invaluable practical experience through the Indigenous Human Rights Legal Clinic and successfully negotiated a resolution the Kawaskimhon Moot in Victoria, British Columbia. After graduating, Jayme completed her articles at a defence firm in Ottawa and has since honed her skills through extensive courtroom experience and negotiations. Known for her meticulous attention to detail and strategic mindset, she works diligently to protect her clients’ rights and secure the best possible outcomes.
As a proud citizen of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, Jayme brings a unique perspective and deep cultural understanding to her practice, particularly when representing Indigenous clients. In her previous role as a Gladue Report Writer for the Cree Nation Government’s Department of Justice, she developed essential skills in social facilitation, negotiation, and comprehensive case analysis. This experience has refined her ability to advocate effectively while navigating complex legal and cultural landscapes. Her strong communication skills, combined with a commitment to confidentiality, enable her to build trust and rapport with clients. Moreover, her empathetic approach and patience are essential in understanding each client’s unique circumstances, ensuring that they feel heard and supported throughout the legal process.
As a member of the Ontario Criminal Lawyers Association, the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and the Indigenous Bar Association, Jayme ensures she stays updated on the latest developments in criminal law. She believes in the importance of open communication and strives to provide personalized service, guiding clients through every step of the legal process.
When not advocating for her clients, Jayme enjoys travelling the world, adventuring, exploring, hiking, and off-roading in her Jeep. At home, she unwinds with charcuterie and watching true crime documentaries alongside her Sphynx cat, Dobby.
